INDIANAPOLIS, Australia –A new study shows that people who are on Viagra or other similar drugs might have a higher risk of heart disease and strokes.
This study was conducted in four cities in the northern region of the Netherlands. The researchers, of the Netherlands, were part of the Dutch team which is working to improve the use of Viagra, other similar drugs and the use of medicines that contain them.
Viagra, which is manufactured by Pfizer, is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction, which is caused by a chemical deficiency in the arteries of the heart.
The researchers found that people who took Viagra or other similar drugs like sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil had a higher risk of developing heart disease and strokes compared to people who took medicines that did not contain these drugs. The risk was even greater among those who were taking drugs for hypertension, which is the main cause of ED.
“The study is one of the first studies to show that people who are taking Viagra or other similar drugs might have a higher risk of heart disease and strokes,” said lead author Dr. Jens Veesteren, of the University of Liverpool.
“This is an important study and the results from the study support the development of further research to determine whether or not this is true in the general population.”
